The Nashville Jazz Workshop, in collaboration with Parnassus Books, announces the return of the Jazz by the Book series after a hiatus of several years. This popular in-store concert series features music from the Great American Songbook, organized with an historical emphasis.
There will be a series of three jazz performances throughout 2020. The series features jazz vocalists and ensembles from the Workshop's advanced classes, in Saturday afternoon performances in the relaxed environment of Parnassus Books. The performances are free and open to the public, and will feature the works of a major jazz composer.
The first of these performances will center on the "Life and Music of Cole Porter." Porter was one of the most prolific composers of the Great American Songbook. He composed such hits as "It's Alright With Me", "Just One of Those Things", "Begin the Beguine", "I've Got You Under My Skin", and many many others.
The cast from the Nashville Jazz Workshop includes vocalists Crystal Miller, Roz Thompson, Kristian Dambrino, Graham Stewart, Louise Kelton, and Rebecca Sayre. They will be accompanied by a trio consisting of Lori Mechem (piano), Gary Smith (bass), and Carlos Ruiz (drums). The show will also feature narration with an original script about the composer's life written and presented by actor and author Don O. Henry.
The Nashville Jazz Workshop is a nonprofit organization supporting jazz musicians, jazz fans, and the jazz community through classes, public performances, and special events. In 2020, The NJW will be celebrating their 20th
